Meshes | Summer Arts Project 14-17yrs

Meshesof The Afternoon small
Date & time Mon 13 — Fri 17 Jul 2026
10am to 3pm

This week-long project invites teenagers to explore dreamlike storytelling, inspired by ‘Meshes of the Afternoon’ a 1943 film by Maya Deren and Alexander Hammid. The workshop introduces participants to creative techniques that transform everyday places and objects into strange, mysterious, and imaginative worlds.

Using ideas from Deren’s film, such as repetition, unusual viewpoints, and symbolic objects, participants will experiment with visual storytelling that doesn’t rely on dialogue. Through fun exercises, they will explore themes like dreams, memory, identity, and the hidden stories within ordinary routines.

Over the week, teens will develop their own short experimental works, working individually or in small groups. They will learn simple skills in planning and creating while using mirrors, shadows, movement, and repeated actions to create atmosphere and meaning.

The project will end with a relaxed session where participants share their work.

The aim is to spark creativity, build confidence, and show young people that powerful stories can be told in playful and unexpected ways.
