This Panel discussion tonight at The Source Arts Centre celebrates the launch of a new podcast examining one of the most extraordinary and tragic events in Irish history.
'The Last Witch Bridget Cleary Podcast', written, produced and narrated by Eve O’Mahony, revisits the story of Bridget Cleary, the young Tipperary woman whose murder in 1895 became one of the most sensational news stories of the Victorian era and continues to fascinate audiences today.
Drawing on historical research, expert interviews and dramatic reconstruction, the podcast moves beyond the familiar headlines to explore the life of Bridget Cleary and what her story reveals about Irish society, belief, and the lives of women at that time.
The launch event tonight will feature a short preview of the podcast, followed by a panel discussion with filmmaker Anne Williamson, director of the award-winning independent film 'Bridget', actor Barry John Kinsella, who contributed voice work to the series, and Professor of Folklore Stiofàn Ó Cadhla. Together they will discuss the challenges and responsibilities of bringing Bridget Cleary's story to contemporary audiences.
The podcast also features contributions from historians and poets which offer fresh perspectives on a case that has become deeply embedded in Irish cultural memory.
The evening will include audience Q&A and refreshments.
