American artist Kara Walker (born 1969) is a contemporary painter, silhouettist, print-maker, installation artist, and film-maker who explores race and gender in her work. She is best known for her room-size tableaux of black cut-paper silhouettes.

Silhouette images were popular in the late 1700 - 1800’s, especially used as portraits and Walker has cleverly updated this style for a contemporary audience. Her images often depict historical accounts and commentary on the slave trade in America which has a strong resonance for viewers linking as it does past wrongs with current events for the Black community.

In this workshop, mentor Cian Laffey will take you through Walker's process and set a challenge.

This workshop is part of the Source Arts Centre's 'Y' Arts Programme. The ‘Y’ Arts Programme encourages young people aged between 13 and18 to create new works of art using a task and challenge based approach. The programme aims to encourage an understanding of contemporary art and avant-garde art.

We set the task, you create the work. This is an online event only.
