A Prophet
France, 2009 (16)
Dir: Jacques Audiard
When Malik, a young French Arab, finds himself in prison with no allies, he tries to be useful to the dominant Corsican gang and its leader Cesar Luciani. After a rites-of-passage murder, he builds a power base of his own. This is an astounding prison drama and, in the British Film Institute’s Nick James’ opinion, ‘no Hollywood director can match Jacques Audiard's vice-like grip on character-driven action cinema.’ The performances are great too, from Tahar Rahim’s brilliant Malik to Niels Arestrup’s forceful impact as the Corsican boss. ‘This is undoubtedly the crime drama of the year.’ |
