Nowhere Boy
UK, 2009 (15A)
Dir: Sam Taylor-Wood
Liverpool 1955. John Lennon is a teenager hungry for experience. Brought up by his respectable Aunt Mimi, John finally meets his mother, Julia. Mimi likes Tchaikovsky. Julia prefers Screamin' Jay Hawkins. This sensitive film shows John caught between the two women, longing for a less troubled life, and escaping into music as he forms a band with some friends. |

Written by Matt Greenhalgh (Control) and based on Julia Baird's Imagine This: Growing Up with My Brother John Lennon, the film has witticisms, and music from Lennon and McCartney's early repertoire. There are tremendous performances from all the key cast, and Taylor-Wood’s collaboration with Seamus McGarvey gives the film a visual beauty which underscores its considerable emotional heart. | |
